Lucio Mesquita is the new director at BBC Monitoring. He joined the BBC over 20 years ago as a Brazilian Service radio producer. He also produced and edited BBC World Service English language news and current affairs programs, including Newshour and World Update. As a senior manager, he ran the BBC's Brazilian Service, its Americas and Europe region and, more recently, the BBC's operations for the West of England in Bristol. He was born in Brazil where he started his media career after graduating as a journalist in Sao Paulo.
