Emily Marks

University of Maryland, MD, USA

My name is Emily Marks and I go to the University of Maryland, College Park. I am originally from Morristown, New Jersey and I am entering my second year in college. As of right now I am pursuing a B.A. in government and politics with a focus in international relations, but I hope to add another major to my degree. I am especially interested in journalism, so the Salzburg Academy is the perfect opportunity for me to explore this field. I am involved in several different clubs and activities at the University of Maryland. I am a mentor for America Reads*America Counts, an organization which allows college students to tutor elementary school students in maths and reading. I am also involved with the UMD chapter of an advocacy group called RESULTS, which focuses on health and education issues in developing countries. I also participate in a variety of intramural sports, including soccer and football. Although I am not entirely certain what I want to do as a career, I know I want to work in the international development sector. This is of course a very broad field with many career options, but I can definitely picture myself working for an intergovernmental organization or an NGO that focuses on global development issues.
