Mary Flanagan, USA
Mary Flanagan is Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor in Digital Humanities at Dartmouth College and the director of Tiltfactor Laboratory. She is an award winning artist, scientist, and inventor who believes that there are social problems and public health challenges that can be best addressed through compelling designed experiences such as games. Recently she has worked to address public health, social biases and stereotypes, and new knowledge gathering. Her approach, called 'Critical Play,' embraces serious social issues and posits these in meaningful, yet playful, ways. Her work has been supported by several commissions, the NEH, the ACLS, the British Arts Council, and she has been PI or co-PI on six National Science Foundation research awards. She serves on the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Academic Consortium on Games for Impact. Dr. Flanagan has written more than two dozen critical essays and chapters, and her books in English include reload: rethinking women + cyberculture (2002), re:SKIN (2007), Critical Play (2009), and the forthcoming Values at Play in Digital Games (2012/3, with H. Nissenbaum) with MIT Press. She holds an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London.
