In recent decades, young people have been at the forefront of many of the world’s most dramatic political, economic, and social transformations. At the same time, there has also been a notable sense of disillusionment and alienation among the young concerning many of these political, economic, and social processes. In some cases, changes have fallen short of expectations; in others, public leaders have failed to gain the trust or respect of younger generations.

This session will explore ways in which youth from around the world involve themselves in political processes and social change, and the influence older generations exert in responsibly encouraging these activities. Issues to be considered include the appropriate roles of adults—such as teachers, civic leaders, and youth workers—in promoting civic engagement among the young, and ways in which a sense of responsibility among young adults can be nurtured in a fair and productive manner. Along with the mid-career professionals who traditionally attend Salzburg Seminar programs, this session will also seek to involve young leaders from around the world.
