Celebrating 175 Years of US-Austrian Diplomatic Relations

Ambassador Eacho says Salzburg Global Seminar is “a true credit to the US-Austrian bond of friendship”

In commemoration of 175 years of US-Austrian Diplomatic Relations, the US Embassy gathered photos and memorabilia over a year-long project to create an exhibit celebrating the relationship between the two countries.

The exhibit made its Salzburg premiere at Schloss Leopoldskron with an exclusive showing for the Austrian-American Society of Salzburg on June 20.

To honor the diplomatic relationship that began in 1838, an exhibit sponsored by the US Embassy has been touring around Austria.

US Ambassador William Eacho has been giving talks around Austria about the exhibit as well as recent milestones reached in the partnership between the two countries.

The ambassador visited Salzburg Global Seminar for its annual June Board Weekend and addressed members of the Board of Directors during a reception dedicated to the exhibit, which was held in the Meierhof Lobby at Schloss Leopoldskron on June 28.

In a relationship that has been through two world wars, the once tumultuous connection between the United States and Austria has morphed into a dynamic partnership fueled by trade and innovative exchange programs.

The Salzburg Seminar in American Studies, now Salzburg Global Seminar is a product of this union.

“Salzburg Global Seminar itself was founded in a spirit of reconciliation after World War II and is an important element in the relationship,” said Ambassador Eacho at the June Board Weekend reception, which was attended by members of the Salzburg Global Seminar Board of Directors as well as prominent members of the local Salzburg community.

Salzburg Global has maintained a tradition of having both the Austrian Ambassador to the United States and the American Ambassador to Austria as honorary members of its Board of Directors, to symbolize the bond between the two countries.

“Each time a new ambassador is appointed, we start a new relationship,” said Stephen Salyer, Salzburg Global Seminar President and CEO.

In his address, Ambassador Eacho highlighted the importance of seeking bilateral opportunities to promote energy and protect the environment while increasing economic growth.

He pointed to Salzburg Global Seminar as an example of the type of platform necessary for progress in this area.

“Even in the 21st century, face to face meetings are critical and these kinds of visits where we commemorate and celebrate together really are, continue to be, the foundation to longstanding relationships.

"I think the Seminar, again, is an example of that,” said the ambassador.

The exhibit was on display from June 20 to June 30 where it was seen by an international audience.
