Deborah Hess Norris is chair and professor of the Art Conservation Department at the University of Delaware, Newark. Since 1997, she has directed the Winterthur/UD Program in Art Conservation. Debra has authored 45 articles / book chapters and co-edited Issues in the Conservation of Photographs. She has taught 150+ workshops for conservators and allied professionals and lectured worldwide. She was chair of Heritage Preservation (2003 - 2008) and president of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) (1993-97). She has worked with APOYOnline to develop workshops in Colombia and Cuba. Debra also co-led the Middle East Photograph Preservation Initiative with many partners -this program has trained 80+ professionals across the Arab World. Today, she serves on boards for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Library Alliance, the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Department of Photographs Visiting Committee, the Foundation of the AIC and as a UD Trustee. She received the AIC University Products Award for distinguished achievement in conservation (2008) and the College Art Association/ AIC Award for Distinction in Scholarship and Conservation (2016). In 2018, she received the Francis Alison Award, UD's highest faculty honor.
