Samira Montiel serves as the ombudsperson for sexual diversity of the Ombudsman’s Office for Human Rights of the Republic of Nicaragua. She has held this office since its inception in 2009. Her office supports sexual diversity organizations in the country and its mandate includes acting as advisor for the ombudsman, receiving complaints from LGBT organizations and providing non- discrimination for LGBT individuals in public services. Prior to the role as ombudswoman, Ms. Montiel was a human rights activist for LGBT issues in Nicaragua, and founded the country’s first lesbian organization, Safo Group, in 2004. In 2007, she publicly “outed” herself in the media as a lesbian woman demanding rights for all sexual minorities.
