Khary Mason

State of Michigan Law Enforcement Officer, USA

Khary has spent more than half of his life with the Detroit Police Department. He has worked as a Homicide Detective and in Special operations. Those roles taught Khary to adopt photography and writing as tools needed to fight crime aiding in the incarceration of those who committed it. In the latter part of his career Khary began to recognize that age old crime fighting efforts yielded very little positive change in the lives of citizens residing in impoverished areas, these methods seemed to be making the the issues worse. In 2016 Khary co-founded Capturing Belief, a children's photography and creative writing program based in Detroit. Khary is also a 2019 Documenting Detroit Fellow studying mass incarceration and its effects on individuals. In 2020 Khary became a Special Agent for the Michigan Attorney General's Office in their newly formed Conviction Integrity Unit. Khary's multidisciplinary arts and law enforcement background, coupled with his early childhood experiences allow him to advocate for children of marginalized populations through mentoring, art, and public speaking. In 2015 Khary attended the College for Creative Studies (CCS) to gain more competence in visual literacy by studying photography.
