Bwe Thay

Deputy Chairperson, Victorian Multicultural Commission, Myanmar/Australia

Bwe Thay is currently the deputy chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission and is a multicultural ambassador for the Mental Health Foundation of Australia. He is known both in Australia and internationally as a spirited advocate for multiculturalism and the empowerment of refugees, migrants and asylum seekers. He works to develop the capacity of multicultural communities, with a focus on leadership development, education, and employment outcomes. His involvement extends from working with individual communities to advocacy at the highest levels. His work informs the direction and policy of service providers, business, and government. Bwe has held many leadership roles within Victoria's multicultural sector and has been widely recognized for his advocacy, community service, and professional achievements. He has received multiple awards for his relentless advocacy work. Bwe arrived in Australia in 2009, through the humanitarian program. Prior to his resettlement, he worked with both international and community-based NGOs. Bwe has a strong commitment to promoting harmony by engaging and bringing communities together to build a vibrant society. His practical, hands-on approach is well recognized within multicultural communities. Bwe holds a bachelor of social science and counselling from the Australia Catholic University and has completed Leadership Victoria's Leader Evolution program.
