George is a human rights lawyer with practical and theoretical experience in the field of human rights. He served as the elected member of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) in respect of Georgia, having first been elected to this seat in March 2005. He was the chairman of the CPT's Jurisprudence Working Group. George is also the former member of the United Nations Committee against Torture (UNCAT), vice-chairperson and rapporteur on Reprisals of the Committee. He also served as the human rights ombudsman of Georgia during 2009 to 2012. George was also the member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI). In addition, he has served as an expert for the Council of Europe, European Union and United Nations on a number of occasions under individual assignments related to the establishment of the National Preventive Mechanisms (NPMs) in Eastern Europe, analysis of the legislation related to the national human rights institutions and NPMs, elaboration of the national human rights action plans, as well as supervision of their implementation. His working record also includes positions in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and various European Union funded projects. Lastly, George serves as a human rights consultant for various private law companies mostly in the U.K. He graduated from Lund University with an LL.M. in international human rights law.
