Tashi Choedup

Resident Sangha Member, Root Institute for Wisdom Culture, India

Tashi Choedup is based out of Bodhgaya, India where they live at Root Institute for Wisdom Culture and study Buddhist philosophy and offer service. They continue to engage with queer rights and other human rights work, which used to be their primary work before getting ordained as a Buddhist Monastic. Currently, they are also a core group member of the NCCI working committee on LGBTQIA and Faith. From their college days, they were interested in human rights and community-based work. Soon after finishing their bachelors of arts in political science and economics, they continued to do the same work full-time. They worked as a short-term research fellow at Anveshi Research Center for Women's Studies on Queer rights on its narrative in the regional language. They were part of the founding members of Telangana Hijra Intersex Transgender Samiti and had been part of the organizing Hyderabad Pride - Queer Swabhimana Yatra. They also had the opportunity to work with Montfort Social Institute on facilitating the formation of domestic worker unions. As part of their faith journey, Tashi worked with Swami Sachidananda Bharati on many interfaith engagements. Right now their community engagement is mostly remotely helping with crisis management, occasional writing, translating, advocacy, and on-phone counseling.
