Martin Bohle is an advisor to senior management at the Directorate General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) of the European Commission. He has worked for the DG RTD in various operational and executive functions since 1991. Prior to these experiences, Martin researched the dynamics of coastal seas and lakes in view of their sustainable use from 1980-1991, working in Germany at the University of Hamburg and Switzerland at École Polytechnique Fédéral de Lausanne. His interests focus on the interfaces between sciences and society, with his scholarly work getting its context from the earth system sciences. Martin's research addresses the functioning of the human-geosphere and the appropriation of its abiotic resources as well as issues including governance and the geoethics that underpin appropriate behaviors and practices, in particular, wherever human activities interact with the Earth system.
