Matcha Phornin

Directer, Sangsan Anakot Yawachon, Thailand

Matcha Phorn-in is the directer of Sangsan Anakot Yawachon. She is a lesbian human right defender, a facilitator and a trainer. Her profession intersects youth, indigenous populations, women, the LGBTI community, human rights, SOGIE, marginalized people, and education. Matcha is also working to mainstream SOGIE and gender equality within the social movement. Her current work is focused in northern Thailand but she is strengthening her network at the national and international level. In 2006 her field work and research focused on young indigenous people in Thai educational system. This led her to start her own organization, empowering indigenous youth and has led to supporting more than 1,500 indigenous youth in Thailand - Myanmar - Karen State boarder to go school and receive higher education. Fifty of these young people have now graduated from various universities and many have returned from university to continue community development. Matcha is now pursuing her Master's degree in Women's Studies, Faculty of Social Science, Chiangmai University. She would like to do her thesis involving LBT indigenous youth.
