Amir Mukambetov

Head of the Community Liaison Department, Kyrgyz Indigo, Kyrgyzstan

Amir Mukambetov is an LGBT activist and currently works as Head of the Community Liaison Department at the LGBT organization Kyrgyz Indigo where he oversees the work of the team. His main duties include managing the outreach volunteers, ensuring the department's activities are in line with the organization's goals and strategy, directing various HIV/AIDS projects, information campaigns, capacity-building, reporting on project activities and donor relationship management. As an LGBT activist, Amir has significantly contributed to the streamlining of the LGBT movement including, but not limited to, cooperating with the Law Enforcement Academy within the Ministry of Interior, conducting sensitivity training sessions, and developing topic specific training manuals. Amir has also created programs around Islam and sexual orientation, gender identity issues, and how to engage parents of LGBT persons in Kyrgyzstan. Before becoming a human rights activist, Amir worked as an Assistant Manager at the Army and Air Force Exchange Service at a US Air Base in Afghanistan. Amir is a proud graduate of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, with a M.A. in Legal Studies, majoring International Law. Prior to that, he obtained his undergraduate degree from the Kyrgyz Kuwait University, with a B.A. in Journalism majoring in TV Journalism.
