Richard J. Goldstone

Honorary President, Human Rights Institute of the International Bar Association; former Chief Prosecutor, United Nations International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia

Richard J. Goldstone is an international jurist and legal scholar who in recent years has been a visiting professor of law at Harvard, Fordham, Stanford, the University of Virginia and NYU Schools of Law. From August 1994 to September 1996, he served as the chief prosecutor of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. From August 1999 until December 2001, he was the chairperson of the International Independent Inquiry on Kosovo. In December 2001, he was appointed as the co-chairperson of the International Task Force on Terrorism, established by the International Bar Association. He is the Honorary President of the Human Rights Institute of the International Bar Association and founding chairman of the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation. From 1999 to 2003, he served as a member of the International Group of Advisers of the International Committee of the Red Cross. He was a member of the United Nations committee to investigate allegations regarding the Iraq Oil for Food Program (the Volcker Committee). In 2009 he led the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on Gaza. Justice Goldstone was a member of the Salzburg Global Seminar Board of Directors and has served on the Faculty of numerous Salzburg Global Seminar sessions. He holds a B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Witwatersrand.
