Vote for Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron as “Best Historic Hotel with a Story to Tell”

Schloss Leopoldskron in the running for top hotel award

Hotel Schloss LeopoldskronHotel Schloss Leopoldskron, the 18th century palace home to Salzburg Global Seminar, is in the running for Historic Hotels of Europe’s award for “Best Historic Hotel with a Story to Tell.” Vote here to help spread the incredible narrative of the castle. The story of the Schloss begins in 1736 when the archbishop of Salzburg, Leopold von Firmian, commissioned the estate for his family. It was purchased in 1918 by Salzburg Festival-founder Max Reinhardt, who invested heavily in aesthetic renovations and began inviting in leading intellectuals from around the world. The Nazi Party confiscated the property during World War II because of Reinhardt’s Jewish ancestry, but after the war, Reinhardt’s widow recovered ownership and offered its use to three pioneering Harvard men who founded the Salzburg Seminar in American Studies, which would later become Salzburg Global Seminar. The independent non-profit organization bought the palace and the neighboring Meierhof in 1959 and 1973 respectively and since taking ownership of the property, Salzburg Global has continually sought to maintain and revive the rococo splendor of this historic site.Schloss Leopoldskron is meanwhile often called the “Sound of Music palace” because the classic movie-musical includes many iconic scenes filmed on the property.“I think the moment that gate opens for you is when the emotional connection begins,” says Daniel Szelényi, the general manager of the hotel. “As someone with a passion for theater, Max Reinhardt is my prime connection. Everywhere you go, you find a piece of Max. It’s an immense honor to manage his physical and psychological heritage.”The hotel offers guests a variety of accommodation options, including 12 suites in the historic Schloss and 55 rooms in the adjacent Meierhof. Guests take meals in the beautifully decorated Marble Hall, complete with a balcony overlooking the colossal Untersberg Mountain. Each year, Historic Hotels of Europe awards top castles, villas, manors, monasteries and other residences. Other award categories include “Best Countryside Historic Hotel,” “Most Romantic Historic Hotel” and “Historic Hotel Best Restaurant.”Voting is online at: www.historichotelsofeurope-awards.com Voters should enter "Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron", select the "Story to Tell" category and submit their reason why the hotel is so special.
