Two Fellows Reappointed to European Union Leadership Positions

Kristalina Georgieva and Johannes Hahn will serve second terms as European Commissioners, but in new roles.

Commissioner Hahn speaking at the "Mind the Gap!" session earlier this yearTwo Salzburg Global Fellows have been reappointed to top leadership positions in the European Union.Kristalina Georgieva will become the European Commission's new Vice-President for Budget and Human Resources. She had previously held the position of European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.Georgieva first came to a Salzburg Global session in 1990 entitled "Negotiation Theory and Practice: Environmental Disputes" and returned to deliver the keynote speech at the Salzburg Global Board Meeting in 2013. She spoke with Salzburg Global last year about the organization's massive impact on her life.Meanwhile, Johannes Hahn will become Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations. He was previously the European Commissioner for Regional Development.Hahn attended a session earlier this year entitled "Mind the Gap! Innovating for Regional Cohesion and Smart Growth." While in Salzburg, he delivered a lecture about the urban policy agenda of the EU.
