The Founder and CEO of Teach for Austria, Walter Emberger, has been honored as Vienna University's Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year.

Mr Emberger established Teach for Austria almost two years ago to help children and young people from socially disadvantaged families.

The organization has provided children with an excellent education and has shown how innovation can exist within the sector.

Salzburg Global Seminar enjoys a special relationship with Teach for Austria, sharing an interest in a range of topics.

In February 2012, Salzburg Global held Teach for Austria’s launch event and has since held a couple of celebratory events for graduating Fellows.

The first group of 25 highly qualified graduates from across Austria took teaching posts in Vienna and Salzburg.

Speaking at the time, Clare Shine, Vice President and Chief Program Officer of Salzburg Global Seminar, explained why the Seminar supported the program.

“Teach for Austria and the Salzburg Global Seminar share a similar range of topics: education, social mobility, global citizenship and social entrepreneurship.

“[We all believe] regardless of background or income, students should have the same opportunities to move mountains in the world.”

Teach for Austria is a subsidiary of Teach for All, an organization launched by Salzburg Global Fellow Wendy Kopp.

The program follows Teach for America’s model, enlisting high-achieving recent college graduates and professionals for at least two years in low income communities.

Ms Kopp attended this year’s graduation ceremony as a special guest and spoke exclusively to Salzburg Global about the program’s success.
