Salzburg Global Seminar Marks 70th Anniversary with Staff Homecoming Celebration

Staff return to Schloss Leopoldskron to mark seven decades since the founding of Salzburg Global Seminar

Over 120 current and former staff joined the weekend-long Staff Homecoming

Almost 120 current and former staff members returned to Schloss Leopoldskron this past weekend, March 31 to April 2, to help mark 70 years since Salzburg Global Seminar was founded.

Since its founding as the Salzburg Seminar in American Studies in 1947, hundreds of people have worked in the Program Office of Salzburg Global Seminar and the Conference Center and now Hotel of Schloss Leopoldskron, as well in the off-site offices in Cambridge, MA, Middlebury, VT, Washington, DC, Vienna, Austria, and London, UK.

Staff ranging from former Vice Presidents to former interns were all invited to the weekend-long "Staff Homecoming" event, starting on Friday afternoon with a Welcome Reception and culminating in a brunch on Sunday. The highlight of the weekend's festivities was a Gala Dinner on the Saturday night, which made use of every state room of the Schloss - in true Max Reinhardt style. External caterers were hired in to ensure that all staff were able to fully participate in the celebrations.

Welcoming guests "home" on the Saturday, current Salzburg Global Seminar President and CEO said the organization had much to celebrate.

"We recently held Session 574. Who could have imagined that in 1947 at Session 1? But if we count all the other special, un-numbered sessions over the years, we've held 837 programs in 70 years. And that doesn't even include all the Hotel's private conference clients and weddings! We've also held another 280 events across the world on six continents...

"We often refer to the Salzburg Global Seminar “family”. Everyone here has played a part in welcoming people from across the world, and creating a safe place where they can exchange ideas freely and search for solutions to really hard problems. It is fitting that we salute this amazing family this weekend. Thank you for everything you have done to help this place survive and flourish," he said.

The Homecoming events drew guests from across the globe, including across Europe and the US, with their tenures reaching back as far as the 1960s. Staff, current and former, were encouraged to share their fondest memories and greatest points of change - some of these memories will be shared in upcoming publications to commemorate the seven decades of Salzburg Global Seminar.
