Leadership for Regional Cooperation in Asia for the 21st Century

Strategy meeting convenes to discuss how future leaders in the East and Southeast Asia can ensure stability and cooperation

East and Southeast Asia have the world’s fastest-growing populations, largest number of megacities, exceptional societal diversity, and have seen regional tensions increasing in recent years. These human, economic, and political security issues require collaborative leadership and commitment from across borders in order to chart a peaceful and sustainable course for the region – and beyond.

Salzburg Global Seminar’s three-day session Leadership for Regional Cooperation in Asia for the 21st Century, will commence October 5 with the Program Strategy Meeting, which will set priorities for this new multi-year program series. The session, which will take place at Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg, Austria, seeks to take an active role in confronting these current and future problems. The multi-year series aims to influence leaders and equip them with the tools they need to be able to work collaboratively through these issues.

Leadership for Regional Cooperation in Asia for the 21st Century seeks to foster the development of leaders capable of bridging differences within the region and playing constructive roles on the international stage. The institutions and networks they represent will share a long-term vision and commitment to strengthening cross-border and regional cooperation as a critical contribution to responsible global leadership and sustainable development.

The Program Strategy Meeting will bring together stakeholder groups from across East and Southeast Asia and a small number of regional experts from Europe and the United States with experience of the complex political, environmental, economic, and demographic pressures shaping the region’s past and future development. It will connect talent and experience across geographies and sectors to catalyze dynamic ideas, policy approaches and projects within a cooperative framework, upon which the multi-year series can build as its foundation for success.

The session is being facilitated by Charles Morrison, president of the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, who for several years, convened a long-running Salzburg Global Seminar program on Asia-Pacific issues, and multi-time Salzburg Global Fellow Surin Pitsuwan, the former Secretary General, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Participants will benefit from an environment and format of unconventional thinking with regard to expanding the scope, depth, and avenues of cooperation in East and Southeast Asia. The session will use a variety of methodological approaches to rank the most pressing concerns and regional needs and define priorities with regard to economic and security cooperation providing a base for the design of the innovative multi-year leadership program.
