Participants to convene at Schloss Leopoldskron to increase their collective impact and expand citizen diplomacy
In recent years, the rise of populism has led to volatility in civil societies. People have felt left behind by governments that many don’t think represent them. Policies such as the forthcoming exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union can be seen as a shift toward nationalism, and that trend has also been displayed through anti-immigration policies implemented across the world.
With these challenges in mind, fostering citizen diplomacy is as important as it has ever been; for citizens to engage with others beyond their borders to inspire changes to this current global, political narrative. Global leadership and fellowship programs, who have the benefit of having esteemed alumni, have the potential to be at the forefront of this change. Therefore, it is vital for these organizations to collaborate to explore how best to implement citizen diplomacy among its alumni.
From February 6 to February 9 2019, participants will convene at Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg, to discuss the future of citizen diplomacy, as part of the program Citizen Diplomacy at the Crossroads: Activating Networks for Change.
The German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance will co-host the program with Salzburg Global Seminar, welcoming delegates from many global leadership and fellowship organizations to Salzburg.
The three-day program of immersive learning will include moderated panel discussions, interactive plenary sessions and in-depth group work and case study discussions. Participants will discuss the challenges for citizen diplomacy looking forward and transforming ideas from fellowship programs into action, among other topics relating to innovation in global leadership and fellowship programs.
This program is held in collaboration with the Global Leadership Consortium (GLC), which provides peer-learning network for many global leadership and fellowship programs. This program will mark the first convening outside of the United States of America for the GLC, which launched in 2012.
This program aims to widen GLC’s global reach and consider new approaches for fellowship programs to engage internationally. Findings from this program will be shared with GLC partners’ networks.
