Inaugural seminar of Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program held on November 16 Friday, November 16, sees the inaugural seminar of the Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program launch in Washington, DC.The one-of-a-kind program is being hosted by Salzburg Global Seminar at the US Institute of Peace, in partnership with nine of the top US law schools, bringing together 45 second graduate law students with leading judges, professors and legal practitioners to explore cutting edge issues in international law today.The highly interactive one-day seminar is designed to illuminate career options for the participants, allow them to present ideas and have them critiqued, and build networks to assist in making career choices.Students will be admitted to the newly formed Cutler Fellowship, named in honor of Lloyd N. Cutler, who served the Salzburg Global Seminar for more than two decades as Board Chair, Faculty leader and mentor to countless Salzburg fellows around the world.Lloyd N. Cutler (1917-2005), who has been described as the last “super lawyer,” had a brilliant legal career. A founder of the Washington, DC law firm, Wilmer Cutler & Pickering, and White House Counsel to two US presidents, he fulfilled the calling of a public servant over his lifetime. An ardent believer in the role that law plays in nation building, and in the ability of law and legal experts to contribute solutions to the world's most pressing challenges, Lloyd Cutler was able to attract high court judges from around the world to the Seminar.As a lasting tribute to the Cutler legacy, the Salzburg Global Seminar established the Lloyd N. Cutler Center for the Rule of Law whose mission is threefold:
•To seek solutions to global problems in areas where the law is inadequate or evolving;
•To advance the role of independent judiciaries globally and to promote universal access to justice;
•To employ innovative methods to engage new audiences and raise awareness of legal principles and why they matter.The Lloyd N. Cutler Center programs involve the world’s leading lawyers, judges and legal scholars in shaping its work, including the identification of issues that are under-represented in international discourse and demand fresh thinking outside traditional disciplines and approaches. Following in the footsteps of Lloyd Cutler, the Salzburg Global Seminar aims to continue to engage and involve young international lawyers, academics and jurists in their programs and now with the Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program.Throughout the day, the Cutler Fellows will take part in small working groups, led by legal experts including Matt Waxman (Columbia), Ryan Goodman (NYU), Ashley Deeks, (UVA), Chris Brummer (Georgetown), Michael Reisman (Yale), Mark Wu (Harvard), William Burke-White (Penn), Jenny Martinez (Stanford), Tom Ginsburg (Chicago), and Amy Gadsden (Penn). Topics to be discussed will be the use of force and humanitarian law, international economic and monetary law, international trade, international institutions and international relations, and the rule of law and domestic responses to international law.World-renowned South African judge Justice Richard Goldstone will deliver a keynote luncheon address, with leading practitioners of international law, including Elizabeth Andersen (American Society of International Law), and Michael Bahar (U.S. House of Representatives, General Counsel to the House Intelligence Committee), offering closing reflections on career paths and possibilities in international law.Cutler Fellows will have the opportunity to engage them in a discussion of how to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities of careers in international law before enjoying a networking reception with Fellows, faculty and invited law firms.Students were competitively selected by their participating law schools:University of Chicago School of Law: Eric Alston, David King, Karen Leung, Megan O'Neill, Christine Ricardo;Columbia Law School: Abiola Fasehun, Nathaniel Lai, Angela Lee, Sam Levander, Sarah Saadoun;Georgetown University Law Center: Melanie Benesh, Ziyi Huang, James E.
