Emory Elliott is university professor of the University of California and distinguished professor of English at the University of California, Riverside where he came in 1989 after teaching and chairing the English Department at Princeton University in New Jersey. Dr. Elliott is also currently president of the American Studies Association. He is the author of Power and the Pulpit in Puritan New England, Revolutionary Writers: Literature and Authority in the New Republic, and American Puritan Literature, which appears in Volume I of the multi-volume Cambridge History of American Literature. He is also the editor of many books, including The Columbia Literary History of the United States, American Literature: A Prentice Hall Anthology, and the Columbia History of the American Novel. He is also a series editor of The American Novel and Penn Studies in Contemporary American Fiction. He has been an NEH, American Council of Learned Studies, Guggenheim, and National Humanities Center Fellow, and most recently, a Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Elliott holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Chicago. In addition to serving as a faculty member at several Salzburg Seminar sessions, he chaired Session 408 on Contemporary American Literature in 2003, as well as serving as faculty presenter in the first SSASAA symposium in 2004. He is a member of the SSASAA Advisory Board.
