Ted Widmer

Assistant to the President for Special Projects, Brown University

Ted Widmer is a historian and freelance journalist, based at Brown University. He has worked twice in government, from 1997 to 2001, when he was a foreign policy speechwriter and special assistant to President Bill Clinton, and from 2012 to 2013, when he was an advisor to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He has spent most of his career teaching and writing American history. In addition to several books on the 19th century, he edited a two-volume collection of American Speeches for the Library of America, and a selection of tape recordings secretly made by President John F. Kennedy. He writes a monthly column in the Boston Globe, and is a frequent contributor to the New York Times.
