Torino Edoardo Calia is the director of research laboratories at the Istituto Superiore Mario Boella, an applied research institute in Turin focused on wireless networking and applications. He is also a contract professor for telecommunication networks courses at Turin Polytechnic. Before earning his Ph.D. at Turin Polytechnic in 1989, Dr. Calia spent one year at the research labs of Digital Equipment Corporation in Marlboro, Massachusetts, USA, working on a parallel processor chip design. From 1990 to 1998, he participated in several technical groups involved in the design of the Italian academic network, GARR, and was responsible for telecommunication services at Turin Polytechnic until 2001. In the same years, he worked as a consultant for several private and public institutions in the internetworking design area. He is an alumnus of the fifth and sixth symposia of the Russian Higher Education Program in 2005 and 2006.
