Conrad Smewing joined the HM Treasury in 2003. He currently is the deputy director in the Fiscal Group with responsibility for fiscal policy and the public finances. At previous position in the Treasury, he has worked in the Corporate and Private Finance team and in the General Expenditure Policy team working on the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review. Following the 2007 CSR, he joined what is now the Fiscal Statistics and Policy team, working first on reforms to the fiscal framework and then on the fiscal response to the financial crisis. Mr. Smewing was appointed deputy director for fiscal policy in May 2009 and was also the head of the secretariat for the Interim Office for Budget Responsibility.
