Kenan Cayir

Professor of Sociology, Istanbul Bilgi University, and Founder, Center for Sociology and Education Studies, Turkey

Kenan Çayir is a professor of sociology at Istanbul Bilgi University and the director of the university's Centre for Sociology and Education Studies. Previously, he carried out several projects and worked as expert and consultant to non-governmental organizations on projects relating to inclusive education, human rights, and citizenship education. He has participated in human rights education seminars at EIP Slovenia and at the Council of Europe, as well as various teacher training seminars at Gürkaynak Citizenship Institute and received certificates in this field. Kenan is currently co-editing a book consisting of lesson modules on Holocaust and Turkey in a project funded by the European Union and coordinated by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and the Social and Ecological Rights Foundation. His books and edited collections include: Who are We? Identity, Citizenship and Rights in Turkey's Textbooks, Islamic Literature in Turkey: From Epic to Novel, Egitim, Catisma ve Toplumsal Baris: Türkiye'den ve Dünyadan Ornekler, Ayrimcilik: Cok Boyutlu Yaklasimlar, and Ayrimcilik: Örnek Ders Uygulamalari. Kenan has completed his Bachelors and Masters education in the Sociology Department at Bogaziçi University, and received his doctorate from the Political Sciences and International Relations department at Bogazici University. Following his doctorate, he carried out research at the Centre for Citizenship and Human Rights Education at Leeds University in the United Kingdom and at the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research in Germany.
