Akilagpa Sawyerr is director of research for the Association of African Universities (AAU), where he coordinates a program of research on higher education policy and management. A former vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana, he is a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the National Council on Tertiary Education in Ghana, and chairs the advisory panel for the Ghana Human Development report. He also chairs the executive council of the Third World Network, Africa Region, is a member of the United National Committee for Development Policy, and is an editorial consultant for the Australian Journal of Law and Society. Former president of the Council for the Development of Social Science in Africa and chairman of the Steering Committee of the Secretariat for Institutional Support for Economic Research in Africa, he has published extensively on law, human development, and higher education. Dr. Sawyerr graduated from the University of Durham, United Kingdom, and earned a first master of laws from the University of London, United Kingdom. He finished a second master of laws and later a doctor of the science of jurisprudence from the University of California, Berkeley, USA.
