Mechthild Becker

Scientific Assistant, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany

Mechthild Becker is a scientific assistant in the East Africa Peru Climate Capacities (EPICC) project at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Potsdam, Germany. She specializes in climate-induced migration and conflict potentials of climate change. Mechthild is interested in ideas how to create learning environments that are inclusive and cater to the needs of refugees and migrants, including trauma counselling. In her research and work, she focuses on analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of policies relating to human mobility in the context of climate change as well as the social and cultural construction of risk in times of a changing climate. Mechthild has a background in political management and modern Indian studies. She has studied in Bremen and Göttingen, both in Germany, and spent semesters abroad in India (IIT Madras and JNU). She also has a qualification as an intercultural trainer.
