Jonathan Bell

Director for Being Human Initiative, National Geographic Society, USA

Jonathan S. Bell is the director for Being Human Initiative at National Geographic Society and oversees a portfolio of projects designed to explore our earliest origins, promote and protect cultural heritage, and explore and document the human experience through research and storytelling. Jonathan has a 20-year career of professional hands-on experience collaborating with international governments on the development and implementation of cultural heritage preservation in evolving economic and regulatory contexts. Prior to his position with National Geographic Society, he worked in multiple capacities with UNESCO, the Getty Conservation Institute, and a number of geographically focused organizations. Jonathan holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University, a D.E.A. from the Sorbonne in Art History and Archaeology, an M.Sc. in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in urban planning from University of California, Los Angeles. He serves as an expert or executive member on multiple ICOMOS scientific committees and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Architectural Conservation.
