Justin Varney has recently been appointed as director of public health for Birmingham City Council. Prior to this he was the national lead for adult health and wellbeing for Public Health England, leading national programs on health improvement, including health and work, physical inactivity, sexual/reproductive health, LGBT health inequalities, pharmacy, and allied health professionals. Justin has over 20 years of experience at the local, regional, national and international levels of health and public health systems including a secondment at Business in the Community, the Prince's Responsible Business Network, and a period as Thinker in Residence at the University of Sydney, working on joined-up government approaches to public health. He is a physician with a fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine and in 2018 was awarded an honorary fellowship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine for his contribution to the field of work and health.
