Pedro Cunha

Deputy Director, Gulbenkian Program for Knowledge, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Portugal

Pedro Cunha is deputy director at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon. He acted as deputy director general at the Directorate-General for Education, from 2010 to 2018, in the Portuguese Ministry of Education. He was responsible for school improvement and social inclusion programs delivered nationwide by the government and also for after-school programs, lifelong guidance services, health education, inclusive education and early childhood education and care. Before that he worked as youth leader, career counselor in schools and developed projects with at-risk youth in several organizations. He also managed community development programs in shantytowns and deprived neighborhoods around Lisbon for municipalities and larger NGO´s such as the Aga Khan Foundation, where he was program director. He also acted as a 'critical friend' for a number of schools dealing with challenges (high drop-out rates, low achievement, high indiscipline/violence rates) and as expert for the European Commission, UNICEF and the OECD.
