William Mwengee

Regional Medical Officer, Ministry of Health, Tanga Region,Tanzania

William Mwengee is the Tanga Region Medical Officer for the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, where he has served since 1998 and is responsible for all regional health activities. Previous to becoming regional medical officer, Dr. Mwengee was the district medical officer for the Masasi, Mtwara, and Lushoto Districts. He has played a leadership role in numerous health-related collaborative projects, including the implementation of a district reproductive health support project in the Tanga Region; the implementation of a plague control strategy between the Ministry of Health and Sokoine University Rodent Research Unit; and the implementation of an onchocerciacis control program supported by the World Health Organization and Helen Keller International. Dr. Mwengee's recent research has focused on the burden of disease and the cost effectiveness of health planning in Tanzania; plague control in the Lushoto District; sexually transmitted disease case management; and an epidemiological survey of malaria in the Western Usambara Mountains. He received a M.D. from the University of Dar es Salaam Faculty of Medicine, and a M.Sc. in public health in developing countries from the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at the University of London. Dr. Mwengee is a Fellow of Salzburg Seminar Session 391, The Social and Economic Determinants of the Public's Health, 2001.
