William Leuchtenburg

William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, USA

William E. Leuchtenburg is the William Rand Kenan, Jr. professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught history in universities for 56 years, especially 30 years at Columbia and 20 years in North Carolina. In Europe, he taught at Oxford University (Harmsworth chair), and lectured in England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Israel, and South Africa. He is the elected president of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the Society of American Historians. Professor Leuchtenburg is the author of a dozen books, most recently In the Shadow of FDR: From Harry Truman to Barack Obama and Herbert Hoover. He is now writing a history of 20th-Century US Presidency commissioned by the Annenberg Foundation, to be published by Oxford University Press. He holds a B.A. from Cornell University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. Professor Leuchtenburg served on the faculty of Salzburg Global Seminar Session 46, American Education, in 1956.
