Kourtney Dean

Nevada State College, USA

Kourtney Dean is a current student at Nevada State College (NSC) with a major in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) and a minor in Deaf Studies. She also works as a course assistant at her college, supporting both first-year and nontraditional students through one-hundred-level English courses as well as mentoring other peer academic support workers. Last summer, Kourtney worked in the summer bridge program supporting and tutoring first-generation students as they stretched and grew in and English class whose theme was "Education as a Political Act," which was largely explored through analysis of Native Literature. More recently, she presented an actor network theory analysis of works by Kendrick Lamar at the Far West Popular Culture Association Conference in February. Throughout Kourtney's academic journey, she has learned and become proficient in American Sign Language (ASL), learned about Deaf culture, as well as the inequality between hearing and Deaf communities. When she graduates from her undergraduate program, Kourtney plans to pursue a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology, while working in the local school as an SLP. She believes that her knowledge and understanding of her own culture, cultures around her, and of Deaf culture, will help her to bridge the gap between the hearing and the Deaf in Nevada.
