Leyla Akoury-Dirani

Associate Professor, American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon

Leyla Akoury-Dirani has been an associate professor in the department of psychiatry of the Faculty of Medicine at the American University of Beirut since 2008. In this role, she provides psychological services to children and adolescents and their parents, and participates in the teaching and training of medical students, residents, and clinical psychology students. Leyla was among the first who introduced the practice of inclusive education for children with special needs in Lebanese schools, and was the first professional to establish a psycho-education program for children with autism in Lebanon. In parallel with her private practice as a clinical psychologist for children and adolescents, Leyla was a professor at the Saint Joseph University of Beirut for 20 years, during which time she was in charge of different academic programs, including the Institut Libanais d'Educateurs. Leyla has also collaborated with the Lebanese government and United Nations agencies to develop more equitable policies towards the most vulnerable children and adolescents, mainly children with disabilities and maltreated children. She was the president of the Lebanese Psychological Association between 2011 and 2016, and is actively engaged in the regulation of the profession of psychology. Leyla earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology and psychopathology from Université René Descartes-Paris.
