Benita FERRERO-WALDNER is commissioner for External Relations and the European Neighbourhood Policy at the European Commission in Brussels. One of her primary tasks is to begin implementation of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). The objective of the ENP is to work with the European Union's Eastern and Southern neighbors in an effort to strengthen the stability, security, and well-being for all concerned. The ENP is designed to prevent the emergence of new dividing lines between the enlarged European Union and its neighbors and to offer them the chance to participate in various European Union activities through greater political, security, economic, and cultural cooperation. In 1992, Dr. Ferrero-Waldner served as the deputy chief of protocol for the Austrian Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1993 to 1995, she was the United Nations chief of protocol, and, from 1995 to 2000, was the Austrian state secretary for foreign affairs. From 2000 to 2004, Dr. Ferrero-Waldner was the federal minister for foreign affairs of Austria. She received a degree in law from the University of Salzburg and served on the Faculty of Salzburg Global Seminar Session 430, European Responses to Terrorism, in 2006.
