Thomas Nolan


Thomas Nolan is a statistician at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), Boston, Massachusetts, and co-founder of Associates in Process Improvement, Silver Spring, Maryland, a consulting firm that specializes in the improvement of quality and productivity. Dr. Nolan’s health care experience includes helping hospitals to accelerate the improvement of quality and the reduction of costs of both clinical and administrative services. He has also assisted in the development of integrated health care systems that are focused on quality care. As a senior fellow at IHI Dr. Nolan has been one of the primary designers of its multi-center improvement efforts know as the Breakthrough Series. He has chaired two Breakthrough Series Collaboratives on Reducing Delays and Shortening Cycle Times in which a total of sixty-six health care organizations participated. Over the past fifteen years, he has assisted organizations in many different industries improve the quality of their products and services, and the reliability of their systems. His clients include organizations in health care, professional services such as law, architecture, manufacturing, trucking, and construction that operate in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Among his clients is a winner of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. Dr. Nolan holds a Ph.D. in statistics from George Washington University, Washington, DC
