Tariq Ramadan is president of the European think tank European Muslim Network (EMN) in Brussels. He is also professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University (Oriental Institute, St Antony's College), and a senior research fellow at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. He was formerly a professor of Islamic studies at Notre Dame University, USA. Through his writings, which include Western Muslims and the Future of Islam, To Be a European Muslim, and Islam, the West, and the Challenge of Modernity, and his lectures, he has contributed substantially to the debate on the issues of Muslims in the West and Islamic revival in the Muslim world. Professor Ramadan's most recent book What I Believe was published in 2009 by OUP USA. He is active at both the academic and the grassroots levels, lecturing extensively throughout the world on social justice and dialogue between civilizations. Professor Ramadan holds an M.A. in philosophy and French literature and a Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. In Cairo, Egypt, he received one-on-one intensive training in classic Islamic scholarship from Al-Azhar University scholars. Professor Ramadan served as a Faculty member of Salzburg Global Seminar Session 440, "Immigration and Inclusion: Rethinking National Identity," in 2007.
