Sandra Abdullatef

Lebanese American University, Lebanon

I grew up facing challenges and adapting to stress and changes. When I was six years old, my parents gave me the chance to take my first admission test for the Syrian national school of ballet; I succeeded as a young ballerina for 6 years Driven by my passion for ballet, I overcame stage fright. Then, my next challenge was learning commitment and consistency that the classical music provides since being a student in "Solhi Alwadi Institute" for music was not easy due to the instrument I chose - the Piano. I had to make sure that my time is organized to ensure at least four hours a day of piano practice. The institute offered me the honour to be trained by the hands of the greatest musicians. I graduated from "Solhi Alwadi Institute" and high school at the same time with very good degrees. After that, I decided to study pharmacy in IUST (International University of Arts and Science), where after two and a half years of hard work with a GPA of 3.0 my next challenge was on, as the war in Syria was initiated. Therefore, I had to transfer to another university, LAU (Lebanese American university), Lebanon. In addition, I had to change my major due to the differences in the pharmacy programs between the two universities. Consequently I was enrolled in the biology program, which is similar to my field of study. I had some of the common courses transferred, and at the same time, I did not lose the chance to study something I am really passionate about which leads to fulfilling my dream to be working in the research field. The real challenge was adapting with a different environment in a new country at a young age. Now, after four years of transfer, I believe that I had gained a great experience on both the personal level and educational level. Last year I graduated proudly with a BS in biology, a minor in chemistry, and a minor in psychology. I am looking forward to my next challenge, as I am currently enrolled in graduate school, to complete what I started, and to achieve my dream in high education.
