Azizah al-Hibri is the founder and chair of Karamah: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights and a professor at the T.C. Williams School of Law, University of Richmond. She was recently appointed to the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom by President Obama. Dr. al-Hibri is also the founding editor of Hypatia: a Journal of Feminist Philosophy. She worked as a corporate lawyer on Wall Street before dedicating her efforts to human rights and Islamic jurisprudence. In 1992, Dr. al-Hibri became the first Muslim woman law professor in the United States. Since then, she has written extensively on women's issues, democracy, and human rights from an Islamic perspective. Ms. al-Hibri earned a B.A. from the American University of Beirut and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania (1975) before acquiring her J.D. from the same university (1985).
