Lani Marquez, MHS, is the knowledge management director for the USAID Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems (ASSIST) Project managed by University Research Co., LLC (URC). A health management and evaluation specialist with expertise in the use of improvement methods and knowledge management (KM) to strengthen health care delivery, Ms. Marquez has more than 30 years of experience working with global health programs and field experience in Latin America. Currently, she directs KM and communication activities for ASSIST and provides technical support to field teams in their use of KM techniques to increase learning and knowledge generation around changes being tested and improvements achieved. Ms. Marquez has written extensively about URC's approaches to improvement and health systems strengthening. In 2011, she led the planning of a two-day knowledge management "deep dive" in which URC, USAID, and partners came together to explore KM approaches going beyond documentation to better understand how people really learn and generate knowledge about how to improve health care. She has designed regional and country level trainings in KM for ASSIST staff and partners. Skilled in technical and evaluation writing, Ms. Marquez co-authored a study on the effectiveness of collaborative improvement which was among five reports that were recognized in 2011 by USAID's Office of Learning, Evaluation and Research for "Excellence in Evaluation". She speaks Spanish and Portuguese.
