Avila Kilmurray


Avila KILMURRAY is director of the Northern Ireland Voluntary Trust - the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland. She has a particular interest in community development, peace-building issues, and women's issues. From 1975 to 1980 she worked in community development and community mediation in Derry. During that time she founded the Women's Aid Movement, and lectured at Magee College, Derry. In 1996 Ms. Kilmurray was a founding member of the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition and was a member of the negotiating team of the Coalition in the peace talks that resulted in the Good Friday Agreement. She was appointed as the first Women's Officer of the Transport & General Worker's Union in Ireland in 1990, and was a member of the Executive of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (I.C.T.U.). During this period Ms. Kilmurray established Counteract, the I.C.T.U. Anti-Intimidation Unit. Ms. Kilmurray has written a number of articles on both political and community development. She received an M.A. in international relations from the Australian National University.
