Patrice Engle is senior advisor for early child development at UNICEF headquarters in New York, where she is responsible for supporting UNICEF's results-based programming in seven regions (158 countries) with a particular focus on parenting, developmental readiness for schooling, and the linkage of early child development information in health and nutrition programs. Previously she was a professor of psychology at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and consulted with UNICEF, the World Health Organization, World Bank and other organizations in programs for child development around the world. Dr. Engle served as chief of child development and nutrition at UNICEF's India office for two years before assuming her current position. Much of her research has focused on the effects of malnutrition on mental development, the behavioral aspects of complementary feeding (responsive feeding), women's roles and autonomy in influencing child development and nutrition, and program development and evaluation. She also studies the role of fathers in child rearing and support. Dr. Engle received a Ph.D. from Stanford University, Palo Alto, California.
