Otto Lin

Senior Advisor to the President, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Chief Executive Officer, China Nansha Technology Enterprises Ltd.; former President, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)

Otto Lin is president and chief executive officer of the China Nansha Technology Enterprises, Ltd. in Hong Kong and senior advisor to the president of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Professor Lin joined HKUST in 1997 as vice president for research and development and professor of industrial engineering and engineering management. At HKUST, his work focused on establishing research infrastructure, technology entrepreneurship, and university-industry collaborations. He also led university efforts in building the Nansha Information Technology Park in Guangzhou to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the greater Hong Kong-Pearl River Delta region. Professor Lin served from 1988 to 1994 as president of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), the largest research and development institution in Taiwan dedicated to the development of high-tech industries and upgrade of small and medium enterprises. Professor Lin received his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry from Columbia University in New York. He is a former member of the board of the Salzburg Global Seminar and was a faculty member at Session 355, Rise of Industrial East Asia and its Implications for the Developing World, in 1998; at Session 373, China and the Global Community, in 1999; and chair at Session 441, From Lab to Market: Accelerating Innovation through University, Business, and Government Partnership, in 2007.
