Michael Richardson

City Manager, Christchurch City Council, New Zealand

Michael Richardson has been a city manager with the Christchurch City Council in New Zealand since 1993. From 1989 to 1993, Mr. Richardson was a group manager of development with the Christchurch City Council. Mr. Richardson’s work involves issues such as central city revitalization, transportation, urban development, urban sustainability, solid and liquid waste disposal, youth issues, and economic development. Prior to joining the Christchurch City Council, Mr. Richardson was a senior consultant, and later, associate director with Peat Marwick Management Consultants in Auckland. From 1982 to 1987, he was a senior planner/economist and principal planner with the Auckland City Council. Prior to his work in New Zealand, Mr. Richardson held a variety of positions in the United Kingdom with the National House Building Council & Housing Research Foundation, the Kent County Council, the South Yorkshire County Council, and the University of York. Mr. Richardson received an M.A. in economics from Cambridge University, United Kingdom and an M.A. in urban and regional planning from Sheffield University, United Kingdom.
