Anthony M. Kennedy

Associate Justice (retired), United States Supreme Court

Anthony Kennedy is a retired Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1988-2018). He was nominated by President Reagan and took the oath of office on February 18, 1988. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, Justice Kennedy had served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, after having been in private practice. From 1965 to 1988, he was professor of constitutional law at the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific, Sacramento, California. He has served on numerous committees and advisory panels including two committees of the Judicial Conference of the United States: the Advisory Panel on Financial Disclosure Reports and Judicial Activities, subsequently renamed the Advisory Committee on Codes of Conduct, and the Committee on Pacific Territories, and the board of the Federal Judicial Center. Justice Kennedy holds a B.A. from Stanford University and the London School of Economics, and an LL.B. from Harvard Law School.
