Martín GÓMEZ was appointed in August 2004 to the post of president and chief executive officer of the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) in Evanston, Illinois, USA, a non-profit organization that provides services and programs to member libraries serving populations of 100,000 or more. Prior to joining ULC, Mr. Gómez served as executive director of the Friends & Foundation of the San Francisco Public Library from 2002 to 2004, executive director of the Brooklyn Public Library from 1995 to 2002, and as director of the Oakland Public Library from 1990 to 1995. He serves on the boards of the Online Computer Library Center based in Dublin, Ohio, the Sesame Workshop in New York City, and Friends of Libraries USA, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. Gómez is the author of several articles and has spoken nationally and internationally regarding library service to underserved populations and the role of the public library in bridging the digital divide. Mr. Gómez earned a B.A. in English from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an M.A. in library science from the University of Arizona, Tucson.
