Mark Freeman


Mark Freeman is the executive director of the Institute for Integrated Transitions, based in Barcelona. He is an international lawyer and leading expert on human rights issues in contexts of democratic and post-conflict transition. During the last 15, years Dr. Freeman has worked extensively with societies in transition, including Algeria, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burundi, Colombia, DR Congo, El Salvador, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Nepal, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Turkey and Zimbabwe. He helped launch and direct the International Center for Transitional Justice, in New York and in Brussels. Dr. Freeman is the author of Necessary Evils: Amnesties and the Search for Justice (2010) and Truth Commissions and Procedural Fairness (2006). He holds a B.A. in humanitarian studies from McGill University in Canada, a J.D. from the University of Ottawa faculty of law, and an LL.M from Columbia Law School, New York.
