Marina v.N. Whitman is professor of business administration and public policy at The University of Michigan. From 1979 to 1992, she was an officer of the General Motors Corporation, first as vice president and chief economist, and later as vice president and group executive for public affairs. Professor Whitman has been a director of five multinational corporations: Alcoa, Browning-Ferris Industries, Chase Manhattan Corporation, Procter & Gamble, and Unocal, as well as a trustee of Harvard and Princeton Universities. She served as a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisors from 1972 to 1973, and, until early 1993, as a member of the President's Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations. She is the author of many articles and several books, including New World, New Rules: The Changing Role of the American Corporation, published in 1999 by the Harvard Business School Press. Her memoir, The Martian's Daughter, was published by the University of Michigan Press in 2012. A graduate in government from Radcliffe College, she received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Columbia University. Professor Whitman served on the Board of Directors of Salzburg Global Seminar several years. She and her husband, Robert Whitman are accompanied by their granddaughter Lindsey Downie.
